Tamang Heritage and Gosaikunda tre

“Tamang Heritage and Gosaikunda tre”

February 10 2014 Namaste: We have very much appreciated an approach combining volunteering for RTEES during one week in the small Tamang village of Gatlang, and a 10 days trek in the Langtang valley, organized by Himalayan Unforgettable Adventure.

This approach was for us an opportunity to discover the daily life of Tamang people in the lovely little mountain village of Gatlang, while volunteering both at the school and health center. This period of time was also a perfect way for us to acclimatize to altitude before the trek, Gatlang being located at an elevation of about 2400m.

The difficult winter conditions and uncertain weather forecast led us to modify the initially planned trek in Gosaikunda area, and to replace it with a beautiful trek in the snowy Langtang valley. All through the trek, we have highly appreciated the flexibility, professionalism and good mood of the organizing team, our guide Mingmar Tamang and our porter Koptche Tamang.

Excellent time in Gatlang and beautiful trek in Langtang valley ! We highly recommend Himalayan Unforgettable Adventure team.

Tamang Heritage Trail

“Tamang Heritage Trail”

Namaste. We wanted to organise our trek before we arrived in Kathmandu, and after some extensive research came across Durga Tamang and his organisation (that are doing wonderful things for the villages of the Tamang Heritage Trail). Durga was very responsive to all our emails. Durga and our guide, Pasang Lama, met us the day before and made us instantly feel comfortable. As we were staying outside the Thamel area in Kathmandu, Durga met us in the morning of the beginning of our trek to ensure we got on the bus, and was there to welcome us back at the end.

The Tamang Heritage Trail was perfect for the winter months, with clear, beautiful days. Our guide, Pasang, was everything we hoped for in a guide, and has also become a friend. He is also a local to the area, so we had the chance to meet many local characters. He’s a mean card shark, and we had loads of fun and laughter playing cards each night. Our porter, Lapa, did an amazing job carrying our heavy bag with a friendly face and smile.

We look forward to returning to Nepal in the near future to trek with this company again, and will be recommending to anyone who mentions a trip to Nepal! Thanks again so much, a trip we’ll always remember.

Tamang Heritage and Langtang Trek

“Tamang Heritage and Langtang Trek”

We contact Durga to make the Heritage Trail and Langtang Trail (1 march to 13 march 2014) and he offer us to go before starting the trek two days at his village, Gatlang, to see the LOSAR FESTIVAL (feb- march Buddhist New Year). In this Festival all villages have different king of activities, inside their families and to all the people of the village. We stayed at Paldor Peak Guest House (Durga’s Guest House) and met Durga’s lovely wife Sarqui and his wonderful cook Dowa. Being at LOSAR FESTIVAL was a wonderful experience for us; we helped to put the fluttering prayer flag (LUNGTA). These flags are cotton cloth squares in white, blue, green and red colors with images, mantras and prayers on it. LUNGTA (Tib: Lung=Wind, ta= Horse) a mythical Tibetan creature from pre Buddhist times combines the speed of the wind and strength of the horse to carry prayers from earth to heavens. Lugta for a Tibetan itself means fortune or good luck and represent peace, compassion, strength and wisdom. In this festival old Lungta are replaced with new ones. Tibetans believe that the prayers and mantras will be blow upwards as offering to their deities and will bring fortune, happiness and good health to all.

Durga also explained to us all that the people of the village and mangs do at this festival, the dances and songs. We eated with all the people and they were very nice to us and they took us as one of them. He also told us that are many other festivals in Nepal, moistly Buddhists or Hindus, that could be interesting to tourist see and learn a little more of this great and richest culture. I really recommend going to Nepal’s Festivals with Durga and his team because you will fell in first hand theirs traditions and became part of their history. Ask if during your trekking there any festivals.
