Lying in the rain shadow area of the Himalayas, the landscape of the Dolpo region resembles that of the Tibetan Plateau instead of the lush, green, monsoon watered hills elsewhere in Nepal, at comparative altitudes. The people, very pleasant by nature, are of Tibetan descent who follow the pre-Buddhist Bon religion. The Dolpo region was opened to trekkers in 1991. It is hard to match for its pristine beauty and rugged charm, where one can still have the opportunity to meet the nomadic people and experience their lifestyle almost untouched and unexplored.

Phoksumdo Lake (3,627 meters), one of the highlights of the whole trek, is a basin of unearthly turquoise blue, ringed by rocky crags and forest, framed by snow-capped peaks. According to legend, Phoksumdo Lake was formed by a spiteful female demon which fled from the saint Guru Rinpoche. The demon gave the village people a giant turquoise after they promised not to tell that she has passed through. The Guru turned the turquoise into a lump of dung, which upset the local people so much that they revealed the demon’s whereabouts. She, in return, caused a flood. It is said that you can see the remains of a village below the lake’s surface.

Our trek leads us further uphill to the fabled Shey Gompa. Just over two decades ago the American writer Peter Matthiessen traveled to the remote monastery of Shey on Nepal's frontier with Tibet. It was a remarkable journey, a pilgrimage both physical and spiritual, resulting in the publication of a literary classic which successfully blends two disparate genres--travel and philosophy--in a single journey of discovery to one of the last bastions of free Tibetan culture.

To get here, you must trek through a registered company in an organized group (2 people minimum). The necessary permits will be obtained by us.
