Situated to the north of the Annapurna massif, the Chulu range of peaks form part of the Manang Himal. This expedition combines one of the world’s finest trek circuits with the second highest trekking peak in Nepal.

This challenging expedition into the heart of the Annapurna range is more than a match for any of the Khumbu trekking peaks.

After a few days to enjoy the many charms of Kathmandu, we set trail in the dusty bazaar town of Besisahar, the traditional put-in point for the Annapurna circuit trek. We trek north along the course of the Marsayangdi River, at various points crossing over suspension bridges. We ascend through the verdant mid-hills and the colourful mosaic of cultures into alpine forest and then up higher into alpine meadows. Soon the temperate climate gives way to the arid desert conditions of the Manang district, home to centuries old Buddhist temples and medieval villages. The Tibetan customs and architecture of the Manang district represent a very different world from where we set trail a week ago.

We spend a few days in the village of Manang (3,440m) to help us acclimatise to the altitude and prepare for our summit assault. To increase our fitness and strength, we take a number of excursions amongst the stunning scenery surrounding Manang. Having prepared our fuel, food and camping equipment into manageable loads, we set off towards Chulu West.

The obvious approach to this peak diverges from the main trail to the Thorung La pass past the village of Manang. Base Camp is established in a small valley to the north. From base camp (about 4000m) the route we will climb up to high camp at around 5000m. From there an attempt to the peak and return has be done in a single day as setting camp up on the slope above high camp is not easy.

We will reconnect with the main Annapurna Circuit route and head up to and cross the Thorong La Pass (5,416m), one of the highest trekking passes on earth with views to match. We continue our descent and explore the fascinating village of Muktinath with its plethora of temples and religious sites, before continuing down to Jomsom from where we catch our return flight to Kathmandu.

All our guides and porters are experienced, licensed and covered by insurance.
